The Glenn's involvement in sports cars dates back to their
time at the University of Arizona when Steve was buying and
selling them in the mid sixties. Back then it was mostly British
cars and Corvettes, which got them into slaloming when they
moved from Arizona to Southern California in the late sixties.
In the last decade or so, they've discovered Porsches. Steve
ran an '86 930 Turbo for a number of years, and Cherryl (a long
time Corvette driver) sold her 1996 Grandsport Corvette and
replaced it with a (new at the time) 2002 Porsche 996 Carrera.
Shortly thereafter, Steve got himself a Boxster S.
The couple is also active in several clubs and vintage car
events, and while Steve has a garage full of vintage-event
eligible choices, Cherryl was looking for a car of her own.
Thanks to Steve's occasional e-Bay habit, they found themselves
with an early 1965 Porsche 912 with fantastic

period American Racing mags and a 2.7-liter engine under the decklid.
Cherryl was a little skeptical at first - she was looking for something
quick, and easy to drive (she has won a number of D Modified Ladies
titles with SCCA autocrossing in a Lotus Super Seven) and she thought
the 912 was a little rough. Further examination proved the car had
been slapped together without much sorting out. They immediately gave
the car to Tony to sort it all out. There were issues with the wheels
being cambered too much to clear the fenders in the rear, the wiring
was a mess, it had the wrong gauges, and it had a number of issues
under the decklid with carburetion and other odds and ends.
A major upside was the fact the shell was decent, and virtually rust free.
Tony got started and modernized the front end with struts, hubs, brakes,
steering rack, A-arms, torsion bars and a dual master cylinder from an

'84 Carrera, and in the rear went with adjustable Elephant Racing rear
spring plates, sorted out the rear camber, and updated all the bushings.
Tony also replaced the fuel tank, squared away the gauges, installed a
roll bar, period bucket seats, Bilstein shocks all the way around, and
dealt with the electrics, oil pressure issues and worn Weber carbs.
"Tony also had the foresight to put me in the car to see if I'd be able
to see out of the non-adjustable side mirror. I couldn't, and he replaced
it with an early seventies mirror that I could see out of." Cherryl said.
After driving the 912/911 on several events including winning the
'Ladies Cup' on this year's California Melee, (a three day low-dollar vintage
tour / rally in Northern California) Cherryl has more than warmed up
to her 'new' old Porsche. "I love it!" |
